Thira or Santorini the most distinctive of the Cyclades...
Santorini, known since ancient times as Thira, is ranked among the most famous islands in the world. Beyond its stunning natural beauty, it is especially renowned for its volcano, whose dramatic caldera invites visitors to stay, savor local delicacies, and enjoy a coffee or drink in a truly magical atmosphere.
The island is located at the southernmost edge of the Cyclades and consists of the main island of Thira along with several smaller islets: Thirasia, Aspronisi, Palea Kameni, and Nea Kameni.
The capital, Fira, is built on the caldera cliffs at an altitude of 260 meters, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Aegean and the volcanic islet of Nea Kameni. Along with Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia, these settlements stretch along the caldera rim - each with its own distinct character.
Oia is the first officially preserved traditional settlement in Greece - and it's no surprise. It looks like a work of art carved into the volcanic rock.
Other must-see highlights include the archaeological site of Akrotiri, the ancient city of Thira on Mesa Vouno, and traditional villages such as Pyrgos, Karterados, Emporio, Ammoudi, Finikia, Perissa, Perivolos, Megalochori, Kamari, Messaria, and Monolithos. Some of these spots are vibrant and cosmopolitan, others more peaceful and secluded. Some are surrounded by endless vineyards, while others are crowned by castles offering panoramic views of the Aegean. But each one carries its own unique charm - and will undoubtedly leave you enchanted.
